Does Your Child Have Allergic Rhinitis?

January 7th, 2016 | 1 min. read

By Patricia Leonard, MD

With children around the country heading back to school this week or next, parents are bracing themselves for the first round of cold and flu symptoms that several kids will come home with after a few days in class. Germs, allergens, and bacteria can all contribute to a child getting sick, but if you've noticed that your child often displays symptoms such as nasal itching, watery nasal discharge, or trouble breathing through their nose, they could have allergic rhinitis. The doctors at our Downtown Houston ENT clinic can properly diagnose and treat your child's rhinitis.

There are many causes of allergic rhinitis in children, such as pollen, mold, dust mites, and pet dander. If their friend they haven't seen for the few weeks of holiday break comes to school with animal dander from their new puppy on their clothes, it could cause your child's symptoms to flare up once again. Each child can experience different symptoms, but irritated nasal passages accompanied with sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes or throat are prime indicators of rhinitis. It's important to have an ENT doctor give an accurate diagnosis, and not simply rely on home remedies to alleviate your son or daughter's symptoms. If allergens are the cause, there are certain treatments that must be administered.

The staff at our Downtown Houston ENT clinic have seen every form and symptom of allergic rhinitis in children of all ages. You may think at first that your child simply has a cold, but if their symptoms persist for a few weeks or seem to get worse quickly, please come see us right away.
