When Should You See Your Allergist?

March 14th, 2017 | 2 min. read

If you suffer from asthma or allergies, you probably have a good idea of when you need to see your allergist or ENT specialist. However, if you’ve just noticed allergy symptoms for the first time, you may need know when it’s necessary to see a doctor or when you can let the symptoms pass on their own. At Houston ENT & Allergy in Sugar Land, we’ve treated many patients who were suffering from major allergic symptoms, as well as those who were battling asthma and allergies for the first time. In this blog, we’ll cover some of the reasons why you should see an allergy specialist, and which situations are more serious than others.

Understanding Your Symptoms

It’s important to understand your allergy symptoms and to recognize what your body is trying to tell you. A reaction to a food, an odor, or an irritant can leave you unable to speak, see, or move, and in those situations, it’s imperative to seek medical attention right away. Other reactions may be minor, but you may still need to see your allergist in order to protect yourself from further problems.

Asthma

Asthmatic symptoms occur when a person’s airway experiences muscle spasms that block the flow of air, or the bronchial tubes become inflamed, making it difficult to breathe. If you have asthma and suffer an attack, an inhaler with albuterol can help the muscles relax and the airway to open up. A serious attack may require emergency medical attention.

Rhinitis

Also known as hay fever, allergic rhinitis can be described as reactions in the nasal passages that are triggered by pollen and other outdoor irritants. A person may sneeze or cough, and may experience a runny nose and watery eyes. If you experience hay fever all year-round or when you’re indoors, it can be beneficial to see an allergist and find out what’s causing your reactions.

Dermatitis

Skin allergies such as contact dermatitis can be brought on by certain foods, medicines, and chemicals. A person may also experience dermatitis from an insect sting or a poisonous plant, and the reaction may not appear immediately. If you have itchy or rashy skin, it may be best to see a specialist and have the condition diagnosed.

Allergies can be a very serious manner, and if you’d like to be tested for certain allergies, Houston ENT can help. We can provide a thorough examination and help you understand what’s causing your reactions, and what things you may need to avoid to lower your risk of reaction. We can provide prevention education as well, and help you create a plan for any reactions in the future. If you require medication or immunotherapy, we’ll help you make the best decision regarding those as well.

You don’t have to suffer needlessly from allergies. Make an appointment with our Sugar Land ENT clinic today and we’ll make sure you receive the care you need. No matter the condition or symptoms, we’ll do whatever we can to help you feel better!
