Houston Facial Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery of the nose is one of the most gratifying and rewarding surgeries for patients. Changing the appearance of the nose involves recontouring the cartilage and bone of the nose while maintaining or improving the breathing function of the nose. Both men and women who have attained full growth are candidates for this procedure. Generally, there is a preoperative consultation that involves a discussion on desired changes, photographs, and computer imaging showing likely results. The procedure can be performed along with internal nasal surgery to improve the breathing function of the nose. Rhinoplasty is usually performed as outpatient surgery and most patients can return to their daily activities within one week and exercise within four weeks.
This procedure is commonly referred to as a “facelift”. The goal is to restore a youthful appearance by contouring the lax skin and muscles in the neck, jawline, and cheek areas. A Facelift eliminates the tired and aged look due to excess skin and wrinkles in the neck or cheek by tightening the underlying structures of the face and neck. The procedure involves small incisions around the ear (which camouflage any appearance of the facelift procedure). Newer techniques utilized by Houston ENT And Allergy include the use of the deep plane facelift which allows for a more natural (not stretched) and longer lasting result. Men and women from their late 40’s to their 70’s are good candidates for this procedure. Recovery times have been reduced with the deep plane technique and allow patients to return to their normal routines in less time.
Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Puffiness and tired appearance around the upper and lower eyes are one of the earliest signs of aging in men and women. Heredity factors may lead to premature aging in this area. Eyelid surgery can eliminate the “bags” under the eyes as well as remove the heavy skin over the upper eyelids and restore the eyebrows to a more youthful look. Our technique of lower eyelid surgery places incisions inside the eyelid to avoid any prominent scars. Laser tightening of the lower eyelids can erase loose skin and wrinkling under the eyelids. The brow is lifted by utilizing an endoscopic technique which involves hiding incisions in the brow and avoiding long prominent scars. These advanced techniques allow patients to recover faster with less risk of complications.
A brow lift (also known as a forehead lift) minimizes the creases that develop across the forehead, or those that occur high on the bridge of the nose. A brow lift improves what are commonly referred to as frown lines; and repositions a low or sagging brow. The initial healing time is generally 5-10 days (at which time you can return to work and other normal activities). Healing will continue for several weeks as any remaining swelling disappears. Newer techniques including the use of the endoscopic brow lift have shortened recovery time without compromising results. This procedure enhances the eye area and reverses the tired appearance that can develop from a sagging brow. It also corrects the crow’s feet in the outer portion of the eye crease.
Fractional Laser Resurfacing Surgery
Fractional laser resurfacing is also known as fractional photothermolysis. Fractional laser resurfacing is a relatively new method of skin rejuvenation in which the targeted areas of the skin are precisely spaced out at a microscopic level, leaving some skin perfectly intact while other zones are heat treated. The effect is visually comparable to the pixels in digital images, as the tiny spots of treated skin replace old, destroyed cells with new, healthy ones, and the untreated areas maintain the tissue’s stability for quicker recovery.
Using this approach, fractional laser skin resurfacing treatments can utilize the intense energy of skin resurfacing lasers, while providing the greater safety and faster recovery time of lower engery, non-ablative laser treatments. As a result, patients can undergo a relatively risk-free procedure, achieve their desired skin rejuvenation, and not worry about scheduling the numerous follow-up treatments associated with most of the low-energy laser options.
Fractional laser resurfacing is approved for use on wrinkles around the eyes, freckles, age spots, acne scars, skin resurfacing, and other conditions. Houston ENT and Allergy has utilized the Active FX system in his practice which is the most effective laser in the area of fractional laser resurfacing. The new Deep FX system is also available which can reach deeper wrinkles with a microscopic laser beam preventing any significant skin injury. Even burn scars and deep acne scars can be treated with this system.
Prominent ears tend to be unattractive and some younger children are teased at school for having “Dumbo” ears. Surgical correction of prominent ears is called otoplasty. This procedure can be performed on both children and adults. Children are good candidates after the age of 5 when the cartilage of the ear is fully developed. Incisions are hidden behind the ear and the goal of the procedure is to restore the natural contour of the ear. Recovery is usually 6-7 days. This procedure allows for gentle contouring of the ear without an unnatural pinched appearance.
Chin Augmentation is a common procedure which brings balance to the facial structure caused by a weak chin due to congenital deficiency, age-related bone loss or facial trauma. This procedure can be as simple as injecting a soft tissue augmentation filler (which can be temporary) to implanting a chin implant.
A weak chin can make a normal nose appear large. If you have a more prominent nose, a weak chin makes it appear even larger. A weak chin may also give the appearance of too much flesh around the neck. On the other hand, a too prominent chin gives the appearanceof having too small of a nose. It simply throws the face off balance. The goal, of course, is a balanced relationship within the structure of the face. While chin enhancement can be a relatively simple procedure, it still requires good judgment, great skill anda good aesthetic eye.
