Is a Nagging Cough Keeping You Awake?

April 20th, 2016 | 1 min. read

By Houston ENT & Allergy

As the seasons change and you notice your allergies or sinusitis becoming more prevalent, one of the most frustrating aspects can be a nagging cough that keeps you awake when you're trying to fall asleep. You may have tried several home remedies to combat the cough, but nothing seems to be working effectively. As your ENT clinic in Southwest Houston, we want to help you sleep soundly this spring, and not let a dry, scratchy throat keep you awake.

Determining the Cause of Your Cough

There could be several reasons why you're coughing at night, and our doctors will do whatever they can to determine the cause. It could be that your bedroom is too dry, but adding too much humidity via a humidifier or vaporizer can actually aggravate your cough, due to dust mites and other allergens that thrive in damp air. Keeping the air at an appropriate moisture level could help you sleep peacefully each night.

If you have acid reflux, sleeping on your back can cause the acid to work its way up to your throat and exacerbate your cough. Sleeping on an incline can help with this, and can also be effective if you're suffering from postnasal drip, which can irritate your throat when you lie down to go to sleep.

Whatever the reason for your nighttime cough, our ENT doctors will work on finding the best remedy for your situation. We want you to get the sleep you need, and to feel refreshed every morning. Don't let a nagging cough keep you awake – schedule an appointment with our clinic today.
